Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup Creamy Peanut Butter
  • 2 cups Powdered Sugar (Confectioners' sugar)
  • 1/4 cup Unsalted Butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon Alcohol-Free Vanilla Extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon Salt
  • 10 ounces Semi-sweet Chocolate Chips (or melting wafers)
  • 1 tablespoon Vegetable Shortening (or coconut oil)

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Combine the peanut butter, softened butter, alcohol-free vanilla extract, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Gradually incorporate the powdered sugar until a stiff, consistent dough forms that pulls away cleanly from the sides of the bowl.
  2. Step 2: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Either press the dough into small heart-shaped silicone molds, or roll the dough out to about a 1/2 inch thickness and use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out the shapes.
  3. Step 3: Transfer the baking sheet of peanut butter hearts to the freezer and chill for a minimum of 30 minutes until the shapes are completely firm, which prevents them from softening during the dipping process.
  4. Step 4: In a double boiler or microwave-safe bowl, melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips and vegetable shortening together, stirring frequently until the mixture is smooth and glossy.
  5. Step 5: Using a fork or a dipping tool, carefully dip one frozen heart at a time into the melted chocolate, ensuring it is fully coated. Tap the fork gently against the side of the bowl to allow excess chocolate to drip off, then place the coated heart back onto the parchment paper.
  6. Step 6: Allow the chocolate coating to set at room temperature for about 30 minutes, or refrigerate for 15 minutes, before storing the completed Chocolate Peanut Butter Valentine's Hearts in an airtight container.

Notes

  • Store finished hearts in an airtight container in the refrigerator for the best texture and freshness; let them sit out for 10 minutes before serving.
  • Avoid exposure to direct sunlight or heat, as these candies are not meant to be reheated; the chocolate coating will soften immediately.
  • For a professional touch, sprinkle flaky sea salt or a pinch of pink sanding sugar onto the wet chocolate coating immediately after dipping.
  • If the peanut butter dough feels too sticky to mold easily, add one tablespoon of powdered sugar at a time until the mixture pulls cleanly away from the bowl.
